Millions know the iconic Pierre Cardin logo and lettering, but few know about the man behind this famous brand. Who is Pierre Cardin? It is to this question that the filmmakers of the documentary are looking for an answer.
Pierre Cardin is distinguished by enthusiastic work ethic – confirms the new documentary “House of Cardin” directed by P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes, great fans of the designer and collectors of his things: from skis, which Hughes got as a child, to the vinyl label Les Disques Pierre Cardin. Fans are in luck: the film mainly consists of candid interviews with Cardin himself, who remains witty and somewhat flirtatious in his 98 years, and his personal archival material. However, Naomi Campbell, Sharon Stone, Kenzo Takada, master’s student Jean-Paul Gaultier, and others also shared their memories.
The film thoroughly describes Cardin’s biography from childhood, when his family was forced to flee from Italy to France, and the opening of his House after working for Christian Dior until Pierre purchased the famous Parisian restaurant Maxim’s and the opening of his Espace Cardin theater in 1970. Screen time was also devoted to the designer’s influence on the subsequent diversification of fashion, influenced by Cardin’s work with the Japanese model Hiroko Matsumoto and the House’s entry into the Asian market. “Once on a test, Chinese children were asked: who is the president of France? -“Many of them answered: Pierre Cardin.”
