Kenzo and the Chinese New Year: a great occasion to celebrate and raise awareness about saving tigers
According to the Chinese calendar, 2022 is the year of the Tiger. The Chinese New Year will start on February 1, 2022. Traditionally, the festivities last for 16 days. In 2022, Chinese New Year will last from January 31 (New Year) to February 15 (Lantern Festival).
The Tiger: the symbol of 2022. But what does it mean?
According to the Eastern calendar, the year of the Tiger will officially start on February 1st, and many fashion brands have already prepared unique packages for the Chinese celebration, obviously with the symbol of the year.
The use of the tiger in high fashion and eco-sustainability
Did you know that since the beginning of the 20th century, the global population of wild tigers has declined by more than 95% and conservationists estimate that there are only about three thousand individuals left? The reason for this is rampant poaching, which endangers not only the lives of striped predators but the health of the entire ecosystem and wildlife in general.
The TX2 project, which is actively involved in the World Wide Fund for Nature, has been involved in helping to stop the catastrophe. WWF's goal is to double the tiger population by 2022. The project timetable was not chosen by chance, because the Tiger itself symbolizes 2022.
It's 2022 and global brands are traditionally showering everyone with red and gold caps for the Chinese New Year. Well-known designers such as Balenciaga celebrated the symbol with the Orange Levi's striped denim collection in collaboration with the Hong Kong brand CLOT. Prada designed a campaign, "Action in the Year of the Tiger," to draw attention to the tiger population problem, a fundraiser for nature conservation organizations, and a challenge for young artists.
Kenzo: A permanent symbol
The collaboration is part of a broader partnership between KENZO and the WWF. The brand is working on sustainability: reducing water consumption in production and releasing items from recycled cotton. The entire range of tiger prints has made sure to donate $10 from sales directly to the Tiger Rescue Program since its launch in 2020.
The second launch took place on March 22, 2021. The collection features a new tiger motif on essentials, including sweatshirts, t-shirts and tank tops. All designs are made from 100% organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).
For every item sold, Kenzo pledges to donate $10 towards TX2's ambitious goal of doubling the number of tigers in the wild by 2022. The collaboration is part of a larger partnership between Kenzo and the WWF, which makes the supply chain more resilient cotton and preserves fresh water supplies.
